2024 Planting

Lots of pictures at the end!

What a  relief when the rains came after Perth’s longest and driest spell – only 22 mm from October to April. Just in time to settle in our first plantings carefully done by the Water Corporation team next to North Cottesloe Surf Club. Rob and Iris from Green Skills did a great job auguring and preparing our sites – an essential first step and helped by  our regular volunteers.  Another 1000 holes were augured by the two Mikes. Our fabulous seedlings came from Ben and Anoushka from Nuts About Natives as well as Apace in North Fremantle.  They have supplied us with high quality seedlings for many years and it is an important part of our success.

Our community planting at Vlamingh in June was again a great success with lots of family groups alongside our regular volunteers.  Thanks to Planet Ark and the Seedling Bank for the plants.

Corporate teams were the backbone of the planting sessions. Water Corporation, Terra Rosa, Veridien and Stantec all joined in and we are very grateful for their commitment and energy.  This year’s plantings were focused on the northern section between Vlamingh and Sydney Street and in the south between North Cottesloe Surf Club and Grant Street.

Children, staff and parents from Cottesloe Primary School joined us again on the Adopt a Beach program and planting is one of the activities most enjoyed by the students. Thanks to Perth NRM and Vanessa for supporting this program.

We had a fun time at Seaview Kindy who invited us to help with planting local native plants at the kindy. Children, parents and teachers all helped and learnt about our special Cottesloe plants and their importance for local wildlife. Coastcare volunteers also worked with Adeline and the Town on the first stages of the revegetation of John Black Dune Park next to the new skatepark.

All up another 5000 plants on Cottesloe’s dunes and natural areas making them look better, prevent erosion and of course provide habitat to to our local wildlife. This community effort is an important and significant part of the Town of Cottesloe’s commitment to the natural areas of Cottesloe.

Thank you to all our volunteers and especially our core of regular volunteers and our committee. Thanks  also to Adeline, Matt and Troy from the Town of Cottesloe who are such great partners.

And here’s the story told with Robyn’s photos. And if you click on a picture you will get the slideshow!
